So you’ve got your web site together, you know what your business plan is, and now you’re ready to register your domain name. It’ll be easy, right? Just contact the right site, pay them $35 or so, and you’re done.

Wrong. You can register your domain name this way, but there are better ways to go about it.

Cheap Options to Register Your Domain Name

So many things! First you should check with your internet service provider to see if they offer domain name registration; if you have a large site, they may register your domain name for free as a courtesy service. If they won’t do it for free, they may have a bulk-rate deal with a domain name registrar, the savings of which they may pass on to you.

If you provide your own internet service, or if your service provider can’t provide you with these options, you should shop around. There are lots of domain name registration services that can register your web site for much less than the $35 standard rate — often as cheaply as $9 a year. Many of these sites sell domain name registration in bulk, so you’ll have to register more than one at a time in order to get cheap rates.

Register Multiple Domain Names

Which brings me to my next topic: why register just one domain? I mean, you work hard on your web site and you want it to bring in as many visitors as possible. Something you may notice online: Barnes and Noble (to name just one) owns domain names BandN, Barnesandnoble, Barnes-and-Noble, and probably a dozen others I don’t know about. Disney owns Go, Disney, and most of their character names. Why are all these big corporations investing in multiple domains?

Because with each domain you buy, more customers looking for a business like yours might find you. This doesn’t mean, by the way, that you need a web site for each name; a simple redirect, which you can set up when you register your domain name, will get each of these domain names to a single web page.

Register Your Domain Name With Search Engines

It’s a placement thing. Sure, if you just toss your web site out there, search engines will probably pick it up sooner or later. But there’s a better way to do it, a way to make sure not only that search engines will find you, but also to improve your placement in their search listings.

With certain search engines like Yahoo, if you register yourself, they will put you in an appropriate category — so that if someone is going through the categories at Yahoo looking for florists in Topeka and you’re registered under that category, you are going to be one of the first sites accessed. There are companies that will register your domain name for a price; you’re better off, unless you’ve got money to burn, to do it yourself for free.

You can also use a few good SEO services, like the one on (they have a pay and a free — do the free one and see how things go).
